2016 BBL Auction Exit Interviews

12 BBL teams completed the exit interviews. The two teams that did not complete the survey will be fined 10 FAAB dollars or just live with the shame of missing the exit interview…one of the two.

1. French Pastries

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Avoid death/dismemberment.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Michael Brantley, I guess. I’m not really sure who else is on my team.

Many starting pitchers. I was supposed to buy 5, not a gazillion.

The one player you had to have this year?

None

The one player you had to avoid this year?

None

Whoever was in the running to take Wist’s spot.

Build a solid pitching staff and then piece in some offense.

Buster Posey at $32

John Ryan Murphy at $3

Jaime Garcia – that dude is made of glass

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Trevor Plouffe

3. Cocky Spainards

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Use my same strategy as last year with about $100 less dollars…terrible plan and worse execution.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Honestly, nothing great. Pretty happy getting Papelbon at $18.

What purchase do you regret the most?

Hitter – Chris Carter $16
Pitcher – Fernando Rodney $7

The one player you had to have this year?

Trea Turner

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Brandon Moss (okay, tied – Ryan Braun and Jon Lester)

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Brandon Moss (okay, Marcell Ozuna or Wil Myers)

4. HooDoo Cats

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Don’t allow Mendez to get me too drunk so that I buy a crappy team and finish in 9th place or worse for the third year in a row. I failed to execute this strategy.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Yangervis Solarte for $7.

What purchase do you regret the most?

Victor Martinez for $15 screwed me a couple of ways. It filled up my utility spot forcing me to sit out on some key players I wanted and kept me from executing the outfield strategy I had planned. Stupid drunk J.Y.!

The one player you had to have this year?

Lucas Duda

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Jordan Zimmerman. Or is it Ryan Zimmerman? I get those guys mixed up. I hate them both.

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Michael Conforto!!!! I hate myself. And Jaime. It is really his fault – such a bad influence on me.

Can’t tell.

Giancarlo

What purchase do you regret the most?

Broxton

Alexi Ramirez. Not really…. Piscotty

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Ryan Howard. I failed.

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Too many to count.

6. Sundance Kids

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Hold back money to have some control during the end game.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Hoping to hit on at least one of Berrios, Glasnow and/or Urias.

What purchase do you regret the most?

Not necessarily regret but I hoped to get Dyson for less than $10 and instead got him for $13.

The one player you had to have this year?

Dee Gordon

The one player you had to avoid this year?

David Wright

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Trea Turner

7. Peep Rub

Stars and Scrubs. Get Miggy back.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Mike Trout $59.

What purchase do you regret the most?

Adam Jones-$26, James Shields $12, Johnny Cueto $20, Madison Bumgarner $29. I could keep going.

The one player you had to have this year?

Miggy.

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Yan Gomes/V-Mart/David Wright/Zimmerman/ most of what became the Pastries (though I like his team).

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Too many to count, but probably Brandon Belt.

8. Darcy Jay’s Crew

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Spend on studs since I had four good cheap keepers. Two established closers, and a good starter. F’d up the starter part which I think will cost me. I will be looking to trade for one or two.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

I thought Gomes was good at 8 but I know others disagreed. I think he will be worth more than that by the end of the year.

What purchase do you regret the most?

McCutch. Wish I had spent that money on pitching. Lots of good value on pitchers late. Also $3 for Adams.

The one player you had to have this year?

Anthony Rizzo, and Davis once Bal was announced.

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Yelich. Hurt me last year and just left a bad taste.

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Kluber or Sale

9. Paezans

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Complement Cole/Arrieta with one Ace and one Closer, and don’t overpay for speed.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Josh Harrison at $10 for value, and Moustakas at $23 to provide added enjoyment to watching Royals games.

What purchase do you regret the most?

None yet. Didn’t really expect to buy JD Martinez at #35 — which didn’t really help me recoup my lack of draft day dollars. I do NOT regret that I actually spent all of my money this year.

The one player you had to have this year?

Either Strasburg, deGrom, or Sale.

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Every player over $39.

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Lucas Giolito. Still not ready to talk about it…

10. Al’s Pals

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Pair an ace with JoseF, avoid closers, snag a bunch of keeper prospects late.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Man. Tough to say. Might be Rendon. I also really like Samardzjia at $6 though that could hurt me.

What purchase do you regret the most?

Tough to say it aloud, but probably Kris Bryant. Wasn’t the plan to spend that much on one player. I would say Braun, but if I had missed on him I would have been bidding with earnest on Pollack.

The one player you had to have this year?

Jose Berrios/Lucas Giolito. One or the other. Berrios more though. I also would have been surprised if I didn’t end up with Trevor Story.

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Cueto.

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Jake deGromm. He went $8-$10 cheaper than the other aces in the group I wanted one of to pair with Fernandez. Ended up with Carrasco instead, we shall see how that works out for me.

11. Blue Moon Odum

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Leverage keeper saves into winning the category Obtain a balanced offense with ABs across all positions

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Brandon Moss at $5 (F*&k!) – Adrian Gonzalez at $31

What purchase do you regret the most?

Jace Petersen at $5. I could have done better with those dollars at that stage of the auction.

The one player you had to have this year?

Matt Carpenter

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Every player that cost more than $35

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Anthony Rendon

12. Nitros

What was your strategy coming into the 2016 Auction?

Spread the risk on offense and Kershaw plus a $15 “ace” plus a $15 closer that is not complete crap.

What was your best purchase (however you value “best”)?

Ian Kinsler at $14 and Scott Kazmir at $4

What purchase do you regret the most?

Pollock at $35 is the obvious answer.

The one player you had to have this year?

Michael Conforto, although I did not expect to pay $20 for him. I thought he would be around $10-$15. Thanks JY Miller.

The one player you had to avoid this year?

Joey Votto.  It makes me sick watching him play baseball.

I wish I would have gone $1 more on….

Story (although this is now in hindsight)

Missing:  Earl’s Squirrels and Meat (either of you feel free to cut and paste the questions and answers to my email and I will add later).
